ALBERT KERSTEN MINING & MINERALS MUSEUM
Learn about the incredible science behind mineral formations and the history of mining in Broken Hill at the Albert Kersten Mining & Minerals Museum. The museum is home to an extensive collection of minerals found in the region, including multiple world-class mineral specimens of “extreme rarity”. The dual centrepieces of the museum’s collection are a massive 42kg silver nugget and the “Silver Tree”, once owned by BHP founder Charles Rasp. Whether you’re a die-hard geologist or completely new to the field, you’re bound to leave here with a new appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the earth’s rarest minerals.
SULPHIDE STREET RAILWAY & HISTORICAL MUSEUM
The Sulphide Street Railway and Historical Museum is dedicated to preserving the railway history of Broken Hill and the surrounding region, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the golden age of rail travel. The museum features a collection of restored steam and diesel locomotives, rail cars, and other railway artefacts that have been carefully curated and maintained to provide visitors with an authentic and interactive experience. Climb aboard the restored trains, explore the cabins, and even blow the whistle! The Museum also offers a deep dive into multiple fascinating areas of Broken Hill’s history, with exhibits including the Broken Hill Migrant Museum, the Hospital Museum, the Ron Carter Transport Pavilion, the Tess Alfonsi Mineral Collection and the Johns Brothers Joyland Funfair!
SILVERTON GAOL MUSEUM
Built in 1889, the Silverton Gaol is a testament to the bustling town of more than 3,000 that Silverton once was. Inside, you’ll find an array of memorabilia that chronicles Silverton’s evolution and the lifestyles of its residents over the course of more than 150 years. Explore the seven cells of the Silverton Gaol, including two solitary cells and one (formerly) padded cell, located adjacent to a lovingly restored hospital room, featuring various tools from the medical profession of old. The remaining rooms in the Gaol building are filled to the brim with fascinating objects, including war memorabilia, early household appliances, Aboriginal artefacts and a collection of Bibles dating back to 1862.
