A Rich Vein of History & Heritage

Mining is at the core of Broken Hill’s history, and has heavily influenced the way the city (and the nation) has developed. The township formed here after Charles Rasp came across an interesting mineral deposit at what he described as a ‘broken hill’ while working at Mount Gipps Station. Little did he know, he’d just stumbled upon one of the largest silver-lead-zinc mineral deposits on the planet.

A silver rush soon followed and the township boomed, spurred on by the formation of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) which grew to become the largest mining company in the world, a status still held by the company to this day.

There are various spots around Broken Hill dedicated to preserving the city’s rich history and promoting the fascinating world of geology. Here are a few of the best places to learn more about this fascinating history!
