Once a vital trade route, this stretch along the banks of the Darling River is home to countless Indigenous heritage sites, historical buildings and scenic river views.
The towns of Wilcannia, Tilpa and Louth all began their lives as important river ports on the banks of the Darling River.
They served as loading points for cargo-carrying paddle steamers heading down the Darling and into the Murray. Before this, the river was known as “Barka” for tens of thousands of years, serving as the lifeblood of the Paakantyi (Barkindji) people to this day. Today, these small towns are hidden gems, each with their own unique stories to tell.
