Broken Hill Conservation Gardens

The Big Ant Sculpture is dedicated to the workers of Broken Hill and their struggles. Built in 1980 at the Stephens Creek Hotel, the Big Ant was designed by artist Pro Hart.

The statue was eventually moved to its current location in Broken Hill, after it was donated to the city in 1990 to stand alongside the Tourist Information Centre and is situated in the Conservation Gardens.

The gardens were established as a joint project between the Broken Hill City Council, Country Energy and the Environmental Lead Centre to highlight the plant species that can be successfully grown in the local region with our hot, dry climate and low rainfall.
